THE GATHERINGFaith. Ganga. Tradition.
THE PLACEHaridwar, Uttarakhand
THE EXPERIENCEGanga Snan & Akharas
INFORMATION REVIEWED04 October 2026

THE SACRED GATHERING

An ancient tradition.
A deeply personal journey.

Ardh means “half”—a gathering within the traditional Kumbh cycle, bringing pilgrims, saints and spiritual communities together.

Haridwar is one of India’s traditional Kumbh locations. Its connection to Maa Ganga makes sacred bathing, prayer and reflection central to the pilgrimage.

For many visitors, the journey is also a chance to encounter living traditions: the teachings of saints, the life of the Akharas, and the daily rhythm of the ghats.

THE SPIRIT OF THE JOURNEY

More than a moment
in the river.

Prayer at dawn. Light at dusk. A pause beside the Ganga.

A ceremonial expression of faith, shaped by generations of monastic tradition.

Akharas are organised spiritual communities encompassing Shaiva, Vaishnava and Udasi traditions. Naga ascetics are part of some of these communities, each with its own customs.

Amrit Snan brings ceremonial bathing and processions into the gathering. These occasions can attract particularly busy conditions: plan flexible travel, allow extra walking time, and respect regulated access.

Processions & timings

Official details will be updated when announced. Do not assume access to an Akhara bathing area or procession.

THE HEART OF HARIDWAR

Har Ki Pauri.
Where the river becomes a ritual.

Brahma Kund, sacred bathing and the evening light of Ganga Aarti.

Har Ki Pauri is Haridwar’s best-known riverfront pilgrimage area. Allow time to experience the ghats quietly, and follow signage and police instructions when movement is regulated.

Experience Ganga Aarti

Priests offer light to Maa Ganga as devotees gather along the banks. Timings vary according to sunrise and sunset. Arrive early during busy periods and leave passageways clear.

Getting around

E-rickshaws, auto-rickshaws and walking can support local journeys where permitted. Do not assume a vehicle can reach the ghat on a major bathing day.

Allow time, travel light

Keep essential documents and medicine in a small bag. Ask your stay provider about actual walking distances and the current permitted approach.

YOUR PILGRIMAGE, STEP BY STEP

01

Choose your day

03

Prepare to travel

Keep ID, medicines and family contact details together.

04

Use permitted routes and bathing areas on the day.

PREPARE WITH CARE

A calmer pilgrimage
starts with a little planning.

Carry the essentials

ID, accommodation details, emergency contacts, a charged phone, power bank, reusable water bottle, secure footwear, warm layers and a change of clothes.

Travelling with seniors

Choose accessible rooms, confirm lift availability and walking distances, keep rest breaks, and avoid a rushed bathing-day itinerary.

Families & children

Agree on a meeting point. Keep a contact card with each child and older companion, and stay together through crowded stretches.

Personal safety

Use permitted bathing areas and available support rails. Keep away from closed stretches; follow crowd flow and never push against it.

Medicine & wellbeing

Carry regular medicines and relevant records. Arrange any individual health needs before travel and locate an authorised help point on arrival.

Pack lightly, behave respectfully

Avoid bulky luggage near the ghats, loud music and intrusive photography. Leave valuables at your accommodation and respect queues.

Bring warm layers for early starts.

FEBRUARY–MARCH

Changing days

Cool mornings and evenings; layer clothing.

APRIL

Warmer afternoons

Plan shade, water and rest breaks.

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO

Latest arrangements
& official updates.

Government update · 30 September 2026

Lok Bhavan confirms the four-month event period and four Amrit Snans. Planning includes infrastructure and temporary facilities; operational visitor details still require separate announcements.

Read the government announcement

Special services, temporary routes and operating schedules: official details will be updated when announced.

Registration & ghat access

Entry procedures, bathing windows and access instructions: official details will be updated when announced.

Medical & emergency help

Event-specific medical centres, ambulance points, police posts, fire and disaster-response contacts will be added after official announcement. In an urgent situation, approach police or an authorised help point nearby.

Check the district helpline directory

Lost & found

If separated, approach police or an authorised help desk promptly. Keep a recent family photo, a written contact card and a pre-agreed meeting place. Official 2027 lost-and-found locations will be updated when announced.

FIND YOUR BASE

Where you stay
shapes your journey.

Balance ghat access with comfort, walking distances and flexible transport.

Central Haridwar / Har Ki Pauri

Convenient for the riverfront; confirm the actual walking route and restrictions. Expect busy surroundings on major Snan days.

Upper Road / station area

Useful for city access and arrival logistics. Verify the property location and the permitted route from the station.

Kankhal

A distinct pilgrimage neighbourhood. Check transfer times to the ghats rather than relying on map distance alone.

Bhupatwala

An alternative base with ashram and hospitality options. Confirm accessibility and local transport.

Shantikunj / Motichur area

Consider quieter stays further from the central riverfront. Allow additional time for movement.

Rishikesh

A separate city option for a longer itinerary. Account for intercity travel and bathing-day restrictions.

Choose your accommodation thoughtfully

Hotels, premium stays, guest houses, dharamshalas and ashrams offer different levels of comfort and visitor rules. Confirm room type, meals, accessibility, check-in, cancellation terms and the provider’s identity. Camps and temporary accommodation require verified inventory and services.

Plan your stay

1 Night / 2 Days

Arrival, a riverfront visit and a flexible Snan or Aarti plan. Best with a simple travel schedule.

2 Nights / 3 Days

More time for the ghats, a temple visit and unhurried arrival and departure.

3 Nights / 4 Days

A relaxed Haridwar base with space for temples, rest and a nearby excursion.

Custom stay

Build around your preferred bathing day, group needs and accessibility requirements.

Sample itinerary durations only. No prices, guaranteed access or confirmed inventory are offered.

TRAVEL WITH RESPECT

Leave the river
as sacred as you found it.

Food during your pilgrimage

Choose vegetarian restaurants, sattvik dining or ashram bhojanalayas. Check opening times and meal arrangements. Where bhandaras operate, respect queues and the organisers’ guidance. Use safe drinking water.

Respect Maa Ganga

Use bins, reduce single-use plastic and keep waste out of the river. Respect ghats, sanitation facilities and the people who maintain them.

Explore around Haridwar

Consider Rishikesh, Kankhal, Shantikunj or Patanjali Yogpeeth according to visitor access. Rajaji National Park needs separate current entry arrangements. Neelkanth Mahadev is a separate excursion near Rishikesh; allow enough travel time.

Keep excursions flexible on major Snan days and verify opening conditions before leaving.
